From Mr. James MATTHEWS, the young gentleman who drives the daily stage between this city and Butler, Missouri, we learn the particulars of a shooting scrape which occurred at the latter place on Saturday evening, July 15. A young man by the name of Charles HOLCOMB had indulged in too much of the ardent and was staggering around on the streets, when some boys stole his hat off his head and ran to a store with it. This aggravated the fellow and he followed them. Entering the store where they were he at once began an assault upon them and kicked the youthful aggressors out of doors. At this juncture Bud LAME, deputy city marshal of Butler, came up to Holcomb and marched him off to the calaboose, but before he was ready to leave, a friend of Holcomb's by the name of John MORTON--a regular drunken, wreckless dare-devil--came up to Lame, and leveling a revolver at his head, commanded him to release Holcomb. This he felt to be the safest course to follow under the extremely dangerous and unpleasant circumstances. A short time after this happened Morton again ran across Lame and began to abuse him when the deputy marshal thought it was his turn to use a revolver. Drawing his weapon he fired the contents of four barrels into Morton and then beat him over the head with the death dealing instrument. Morton lived but a few minutes after being shot. Lame wa arrested and his examination set for Thursday of this week. The people of our neighboring city have lost a worthless citizen but it is considered a question of doubt as to whether the killing was justifiable. Lame was acting as deputy in consequence of the sickness of the regular marshal. Since the above was in type we learn that both Morton and Holcomb drew revolvers on Lame at the time of the shooting, and that Morton fired one shot at the deputy marshal.
