Fort Scott, Kansas Directory of 1907 reports Sarah as widowed and boarding at 1104 East Wall Street, Fort Scott.

Sarah’s obituary lists precession in death by Jenny, George W., (1918); Mary Maude (1881) Her Death Certificate contained no revelations except that Sarah died of pneumonia. Sarah is buried in a grave with a small brick marker engraved only, “S.E.”

MRS SARAH HOFFMAN

Sarah Elizabeth Neighbors was born August 22, 1844 at Crossroads, VA and departed this life January 31, 1924 at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 9 days. Her parents came to Missouri when she was a child and she was united in marriage to William Simpson in Johnson County, Missouri and to this union six children were born - Jennie, George W., Mary Maude, John L., William H. and Minnie Mae.

In 1905, Mr. Simpson passed away. Mrs. Simpson was also preceded in death by three children - Jenny, George and Mary Maude.

The deceased made her home with William H. Simpson at Fort Scott until 1919, when she was again united in marriage to James Hoffman of Nashville, MO and has resided in and about Nashville ever since.

In girlhood she was united with the Baptist church, and remained a faithful member. She leaves to mourn her death her husband, James Hoffman, three children and six step-children, as follows: John L. and William H. Simpson of Fort Scott, Mrs. Mae Barnes of Chicago, Ill, and A.T. Hoffman of Corona, Cal.; J.B. Hoffman of Columbus, Kas, Mrs. D.C. Pence of Golden City, Mo., Mrs. J.S. Myers of Nashville, MO., Mrs. Guy Coots of Pittsburg, Kas., J.H. Hoffman of Kansas City, Mo., and 18 grandchildren.

She also is mourned by a host of friends.

(Roll M432-403, Page 7B,Line 39) William’s age is shown in the 1850 Census as nine years. 1860 The family moves to Lexington, Lafayette, Missouri 1870 back to Johnson County, Hzael Hill Twp - William and Sarah are there with John, George and Jane. 1880, William, Sarah and family move to LaCygne, Linn, Knasas.

1888 William is listed in the Rich Hill / Butler, Missouri Directory, page 36 working as a section foreman and living at Spruce and 7th Streets

1896, William is a laborer, and lives at 518 East 1st Street. 1898, and William works for the KCFtS&MRR. He and his sons William and George live at 1024 East Wall Street. 1901 Fort Scott Kansas City Directory shows William working for Charles & Blevins, grocers, at 700 East Wall Street, Fort Scott, Kansas. Place of residence is 715 East Wall Street, Fort Scott, formerly the grocery of J.L. Messenger. In 1902-3, William is working for the railroad, and lives at 209 N. Caldwell, with son William Henry.

William was a private, 71st Regiment, Company “A”, Enrolled Missouri Militia, Civil War

The 1900 census says that William and Sarah have been married 35 years. That would have their marriage take place in Johnson County, Missouri. No record has been found.
